Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people process and recover from traumatic or distressing life experiences. EMDR is widely used in the treatment of trauma, anxiety, and other difficulties connected to overwhelming events.

Sometimes difficult experiences are not fully processed by the brain at the time they occur. As a result, memories can remain “stuck,” continuing to trigger emotional distress, anxiety, or negative beliefs long after the event has passed.
EMDR therapy helps the brain reprocess these experiences so they become less emotionally overwhelming and easier to integrate.
EMDR therapy may help with:
- Trauma and post-traumatic stress
- Distressing or intrusive memories
- Anxiety and panic
- Negative self-beliefs or feelings of shame
- Emotional triggers connected to past experiences
- Experiences that continue to affect relationships or daily life
How EMDR therapy works
During EMDR therapy, clients briefly focus on a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or other forms of alternating sensory input. This process helps the brain reorganize how the memory is stored, allowing it to be integrated in a healthier way.
EMDR therapy does not require clients to repeatedly describe traumatic events in detail. Instead, the process helps the brain naturally reprocess difficult memories so they lose their emotional intensity.
Our approach to EMDR therapy
At White Oaks Therapy Centre, EMDR is provided by therapists who are trained in trauma-informed care and who work carefully to ensure clients feel safe and supported throughout the process. EMDR therapy is typically integrated with other approaches that help strengthen emotional regulation and nervous system stability before deeper trauma processing begins.
We provide EMDR therapy in Collingwood as well as secure online therapy across Ontario, making specialized trauma treatment accessible while maintaining a supportive and collaborative therapeutic environment.
